Scott Symes

About

Software engineer who recently moved from Australia to Seattle (U.S. green card). A decade across mobile, embedded and full-stack, an aerospace engineering degree and a long-held goal of building software for space. Keen cyclist too.

Software Engineer: Mobile, Embedded, & Full-Stack.

Scott has spent the last 10+ years shipping production software used by millions: native mobile apps including Australia's most downloaded app of 2021 (a COVID contact-tracing platform peaking at 8.1 million check-ins a day), a major bank's digital banking app, and healthcare products pairing iOS apps with watchOS sensors and Bluetooth-connected hardware. He started out writing C/C++ firmware for embedded devices, leads squads, has scaled client teams from 1 to 14 developers per platform, and works the way regulated environments demand: 80%+ test coverage, trunk-based development, feature flags and CI/CD. With a Bachelor of Engineering in Aerospace Engineering and a U.S. green card, he is open to software engineering roles across the stack, from space infrastructure to consumer products, plus the occasional freelance project.

Experience

Senior Software Engineer (iOS)

Jul. 2024 – Aug. 2026

Atlas Mobility

  • Refactored legacy codebase from singletons and static accessors to a protocol-oriented architecture with dependency injection, so previously untestable code could be unit tested.
  • Migrated Xamarin codebase to native Swift, achieving 80%+ unit test coverage.
  • Built FDA-regulated medical-device software: a watchOS sensor app streaming patient turn-angle data to iPad clinical dashboards used by nursing staff.
  • Led trunk-based development process, introduced feature-flagging, and enhanced CI/CD with Azure DevOps.
  • Introduced shift-left QA and tighter code review standards.
  • Made heavy use of AI tools to speed up feature work and cut boilerplate.

Senior Software Engineer (iOS)

Jul. 2022 – Nov. 2023

Davidson Technology

  • Led an iOS squad developing the app's landing screen, covering accounts, financial wellbeing and savings goals.
  • Ran the in-app promotion of savings-goal creation, which lifted new goals created by 8%.
  • Collaborated with senior leadership to develop high-level roadmap features.

Senior Software Engineer (Mobile)

Jan. 2021 – Jul. 2022

Two Bulls (now DEPT)

  • Led the iOS development of the Service Victoria Digital Wallet app, the state of Victoria's COVID contact tracing solution throughout the pandemic.
  • App featured an AppClip launched by QR code. It was the highest use AppClip in the Asia-Pacific region, and in the top 5 globally. The app was the most downloaded app in Australia in 2021, at its peak registered up to 8.1 million check-ins a day and more than 6 million digital vaccination certificates have been added to the app.
  • Guided junior developers in assisting with unit-testing and refactoring code into a protocol-oriented structure.
  • Migrated dependency management to Swift Package Manager with local packages, cutting onboarding, setup and build times, and shaving roughly 7.5s off app load time.
  • Assisted client with bringing development in-house and growing the team from 1 developer per-platform, to 14 per-platform. Working with in-house developers and contractors from other agencies.

Mobile Application Developer

Jan. 2019 – Jul. 2020

Lyf App

  • Headed up app development for iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin & Java) for a social media app, Lyf
  • Introduced new features including specs for API requirements.
  • Moved Lyf's project management over to agile workflows.

Mobile Application Developer

Jul. 2020 – Jan. 2021

Davey Water

  • App development with iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) integrating with internet of things (IoT) water products.
  • iOS & Android development of app featuring Bluetooth (BLE) connectivity for cloud connected IoT Pool Chlorinator system. Working alongside electronics engineers.
